- Peer-to-Peer Installation
Inspired by Robert Irwin’s Miracle Mile, this multimedia installation simulates the download progress bar of a file shared through a decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) torrent network. In these networks, files are downloaded in scattered fragments from multiple sources, with each piece shared by participants, or “peers.”
Passersby take on the role of “peers,” moving through the space to brighten the lights, simulating the process of downloading fragments from multiple peers in a torrent network. As they “download,” they also begin “seeding” the file—sharing those fragments back into the network.
In other words, the more peers seeding, the faster the download progresses. Once all lights reach full brightness, symbolizing the completed download, a signal triggers the printer to produce a copy of The dotCommunist Manifesto by Eben Moglen (Columbia University).
This installation invites reflection on the access and sharing of digital media and resources in the modern age of information.
