- Peer-to-Peer Installation
Tools: Arduino Mega, WS2812B LEDs, wireless printer, Kinect, projector, Processing, TSPS Inspired by Robert Irwin’s Miracle Mile, this multimedia installation simulates the download progress bar of a file shared through a decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) torrent network. In these networks, files are downloaded in scattered fragments from multiple sources, with each piece shared by participants, or “peers.”
Passersby take on the role of “peers,” moving through the space to brighten the lights, simulating the process of downloading fragments from multiple peers in a torrent network. As they “download,” they also begin “seeding” the file—sharing those fragments back into the network.
In other words, the more peers seeding, the faster the download progresses. Once all lights reach full brightness, symbolizing the completed download, a signal triggers the printer to produce a copy of The dotCommunist Manifesto by Eben Moglen (Columbia University).
This installation invites reflection on the access and sharing of digital media and resources in the modern age of information.
The installation begins in a blank, unlit state. 
A Kinect sensor detects user movements, starting the interaction. 
As users move, their position determines the brightness of the installation. 
With the help of multiple participants (“peers”), the bars light up progressively until reaching full brightness. 
Once a bar reaches full brightness, the light changes from blue to green. 
When all bars are fully illuminated (all lights green), the installation sends a signal to the wireless printer. 
During printing, the installation displays a downloading animation, flashing from left to right. 
The printer produces a physical copy of the installation booklet. 
Participants can collect the printed booklet from the wireless printer. 
The booklet is printed on-demand and can be saddle-stitched. 
The booklet explores the concept of free information in the digital age.
